What is gastric bypass? Gastric bypass is a bariatric surgery for severely obese patients. It is intended to facilitate weight loss and consequently, liberate the patient from obesity-related disease. (Improved quality of life is one of this surgery's positive "side effects.")
Gastric bypass surgery shrinks the natural size of the stomach and routes the food you digest so it bypasses a part of the small intestine. Gastric bypass patients feel full after eating a small amount of food. The reduced route consumed food travels also reduces the caloric absorption of the food by the patient's body. Both help gastric bypass patients lose weight and keep it off.
As much as the brief description of the principle and goal of gastric bypass surgery sounds simple and easy, the surgery itself isn't. Its duration is 1 - 4 hours. Gastric bypass is performed under a general anesthesia. The patient remains hospitalized for several days following gastric bypass surgery.
The surgery itself involves the stapling of the stomach to reduce its size and then attaching the Y-shaped part of the small intestine to the new stomach pouch in such a way that food bypasses the duodenum. (Since the surgery is so complex, some patients may need a temporary gastrostomy tube inserted into the lower stomach while the body adjusts itself to the new route into the small intestine.)
There are two different techniques used for gastric bypass surgery, or to be more specific Roux-en-Y-gastric bypass, one is an open surgery and the other laparoscopic. (The open one involves a long cut; the laparoscopic several small incisions.) An open surgery requires longer recovery time and leaves behind more scarring. Unfortunately, the decision which technique is more appropriate for you is made by the doctor based on variety of factors; it's not a matter of a personal preference.
During recovery after gastric bypass surgery, the patient often has swollen stomach and soreness for a while, your doctor will prescribe pain-controlling medication to help you through the initial stage of recovery. The usual recovery time varies from 2 to 5 weeks.
An important part of recovery includes dietary adjustments, behavioral therapy, nutritional supplementation and - of course! - an exercise regimen.
Gastric bypass is credited for having fewer complications than other bariatric surgery procedures. Still, there are several complications possible: the risk of pneumonia following the surgery; blood clots, incision site infection, malabsorption of nutrients which may lead to anemia (or osteoporosis) and the possibility of a leak at the staple lines.
Will gastric bypass be the solution to your obesity problem? It might be, consult your doctor, he'll advise you and refers you to the appropriate specialist. (There are several excellent surgeons who perform gastric bypass in Los Angeles area.) Before making your decision to undergo gastric bypass however be sure to understand that every bariatric surgery's final outcome depends on the patient's commitment to a new and healthy lifestyle. The surgery is the first half of the solution, your self-discipline is the second half.
